The U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute at NIST has signed groundbreaking agreements with AI companies Anthropic and OpenAI to collaborate on AI safety research, testing, and evaluation. These first-of-their-kind MOUs grant the Institute access to new AI models from both companies, enabling joint research on evaluating capabilities and mitigating risks before and after public release.
The agreements also involve providing feedback to improve model safety in collaboration with the U.K. AI Safety Institute. This initiative builds on NIST's 120-year legacy and aligns with the Biden-Harris administration's Executive Order on AI safety.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards ensuring the safe and trustworthy development of AI, with potential global impacts on how AI technologies are evaluated and deployed responsibly.
AI INTEGRATION

OpenAI is accelerating its AI hardware development by securing initial production capacity with TSMC for the upcoming Angstrom-class A16 manufacturing process, reports from Taiwan's Economic Daily indicate. This strategic partnership includes collaboration with U.S. firms Broadcom and Marvell to create custom ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) chips tailored to the rising computational demands of OpenAI's models. Production is anticipated to begin in late 2026, utilizing TSMC's cutting-edge 3nm and A16 processes.
The collaboration underscores OpenAI's commitment to AI performance, making it a key client for Broadcom and significant in AI hardware. Plans for a dedicated TSMC factory are postponed, with TSMC CEO C.C. Wei deeming OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's proposals "too aggressive."
Apple's early access to TSMC's A16 process for future iPhones highlights its collaboration with OpenAI on the Apple Intelligence project, enhancing AI with custom hardware. Broadcom and Marvell's involvement marks a leap in AI chip technology. This development also benefits related industries like optical communications, aiding companies such as Huaxingguang and Boruwei.
