California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed a landmark AI safety bill that sought to introduce some of the first regulations on artificial intelligence in the U.S. The bill, which faced strong opposition from major tech firms like Google and OpenAI, would have required advanced AI systems to undergo safety testing and include a "kill switch" to prevent potential threats. Newsom argued the legislation could stifle innovation and drive developers out of California.
